The Secret to a Calm, Collected Home

The 60–30–10 Color Rule

One of the questions I hear most often from clients is simple, yet surprisingly difficult to answer:

“How do I know what the right color is for my home?”

Color has an incredible ability to shape how a space feels. The right palette can make a home feel calm, welcoming, and effortlessly put together. The wrong balance, however, can leave a room feeling busy or unsettled—even if every individual piece is beautiful.

At Collins & Co. Calm Collected Interiors, I guide my clients through a thoughtful approach to color that helps create harmony throughout the home. One of the most timeless tools designers use is known as the 60–30–10 rule. Think of it less as a rigid formula and more as a gentle rhythm for designing a space.

The 60%: The Foundation of the Room

Every calm and collected interior begins with a strong foundation. The 60% represents the primary color that anchors the room. This is the palette that quietly sets the tone and creates the overall feeling of the space.

You’ll often see this color expressed through:

  • Walls

  • Sofas or large upholstery pieces

  • Area rugs

  • Cabinetry

  • Larger furniture pieces

Because this color occupies the majority of the room, it should feel grounding and timeless. For many homes, this often means working with layered neutrals—soft whites, warm taupes, gentle grays, or earthy tones that allow the space to breathe. When the foundation is right, everything else begins to fall into place.

The 30%: The Layer That Adds Depth

Once the foundation is established, we begin to layer in personality. The 30% is where the accent color enters the room. This layer brings depth, contrast, and visual interest without overwhelming the calm foundation we’ve created.

Accent colors often appear in:

  • Occasional chairs

  • Drapery or textiles

  • Decorative pillows

  • Artwork

  • Painted furniture or built-ins

This is where a space begins to feel curated rather than simply decorated. The accent color creates movement and dimension, giving the room a sense of life and warmth.

The Final 10%: The Jewelry of the Room

Many people assume the last 10% should be another color. But in my design process, I like to think of this final layer as the jewelry of the room. These are the metal finishes that quietly tie everything together:

  • Cabinet hardware

  • Light fixtures

  • Plumbing fixtures

  • Decorative accents

Whether we choose brushed brass, polished nickel, matte black, or another finish, these small details add a level of refinement that elevates the entire space. Like the perfect piece of jewelry completing an outfit, these finishing touches bring cohesion and polish to the room.

Creating Calm, Collected Interiors

When clients work with Collins & Co. Calm Collected Interiors, my goal is never simply to choose colors. Instead, we thoughtfully shape a palette that reflects how you want your home to feel.

Together we discover:

  • The foundational colors that ground the space

  • The accent tones that add character and warmth

  • The metal finishes that refine and elevate the design

When these elements are balanced with intention, a home begins to feel effortless—calm, inviting, and beautifully collected. Because great design isn’t about filling a room with more things. It’s about creating a space that feels harmonious, personal, and deeply lived in.
